MANAGEMENT OF ARCHIVES IN PUBLIC UNIVERSITIES OF KENYA, KISII UNIVERSITY

Abstract

Archives play a big and crucial role in housing records of enduring value, those that deserves permanent preservation. Archives has gained  much  prominence  in  recent  years  and  is said  to aid planning, ensure fair and equitable distribution of resources, promote  transparency, rule of law and good  governance   hence  curbing  against  vices  like  corruption, bribery and nepotism. This study sought to find out if there is a policy governing archives in the Kisii university, to establish the procedures involved in the management of archives in the university, to establish the procedures involved in the management of archives in the university, to determine the importance of archives in the Kisii University and lastly to find out the challenges facing the management of archives in the university. The study employed a descriptive survey design. The target population included staffs of the registry department. Primary data was collected though administration of structured questionnaires with all members of the staff selected as respondents in a census method of data collection basis. The primary data collection instruments were face to face interviews and use of questionnaires. Qualitative approach will be used to present, analyze and interpret the data. The study findings will help to improve archives management practice in order to align it to the smooth running of University functions.
